10 THINGS YOU CAN DO TO HELP CLEAN THE AIR IN YOUR AREA

We offer the following suggestions on how you can join the South Coast Air Quality Management District in “Cleaning the Air That We Breathe.” Together, we are making a difference.

1) Motor vehicles are responsible for more than half of all smog-forming emissions. When buying your next vehicle, consider choosing one of the lowest-polluting models available. For more information, go to www.cleanairchoices.org
2) AQMD relies on feedback from businesses and the general public to help design its regulations and programs. Help shape the region’s path to clean air by joining the AQMD Clean Air Congress. For more information, call 1-800-CUT-SMOG.
3) Some older vehicles and those that are improperly maintained emit at least 20 times more pollution than newer models in good working order. Report smoking vehicles and suspected air pollution violations by calling 1-800-CUT-SMOG.
4) Vehicles in the Southland traveled 336 million miles in 200, and the increased congestion slowed travel to an average of 38 mph on freeways and arterial streets. Help cut pollution by driving less. Consider carpooling to work one day a week or more. Combine shopping errands into one trip or shop by phone, mail or the Internet. Also drive smart by avoiding “jack rabbit” starts, obeying the speed limit and using cruise control to maintain a steady speed.
5) Dry cleaners in the region emit about 850 tons a year of a toxic chemical called perchloroethylene. Try non-toxic alternatives to dry cleaning such as professional wet cleaning.
6) During the energy crisis, Californians did a better than expected job at conservation. If you haven’t already, choose from the many options available to conserve energy—and save money—such as using compact fluorescent light bulbs, using the microwave to cook small meals and buying energy-efficient appliances when you replace old ones.
7) Painting homes and other structures causes more than 50 tons per day of smog-forming pollutants—five times the amount from all the oil refineries in the South Coast of California. Read paint labels and choose coatings that contain little or no smog-forming pollutants, identified as volatile organic compounds or VOCs.
8) Energy needed for summertime air conditioning boosts power plant emissions. Plant a tree to help shad your home and cool it naturally.
9) In one year of operation, one older gasoline-powered lawn mower pollutes as much as a new car driven 86,000 miles. Help cut pollution by purchasing an electric mower when you replace your gasoline-powered model.
10) While many Southern Californians enjoy a summer cookout, traditional barbecues can be a significant source of air pollution. A simple solution is to replace your old barbecue with a natural gas grill. Some local utilities even offer rebates when purchasing gas grills.

Interpersonal and Intercultural Connections and the Envirnment

The human race must transform our thoughts and minds towards our understanding and appreciation of cultural diversities and intercultural and interpersonal relationships. We need to understand that our abilities to sustain life on this planet is largely contingent on how well and effective we are able to communicate with one another. In order for human life to continue to thrive on this planet we must become more ecologically aware and take action that better facilitates and encourages the sanctity of life and the realization that without maintaining a cognitive respect and taking action for the greater good of humanity and maintaining a healthy environment; the human race and much of creation will be destroyed. We need to consider the preciseness of planatery revolutions, distance earth is from the sun, amount in percentages of oxygen we currently have on our planet  in relation to being able to sustain life and keep in perspective the lasting effects we impress upon the environment and upon our species if these precise alignments fall off kilter. Native Americans have been long aware of the importance of maintaining synergy between nature our environment and all humanity. Have they not taught us a great lesson in which we should learn? The only world view that makes sense and can possibly synergize our globe and break down any and all cultural barriers, is if we focus our attentions upon maintaining and growing relationships between people and intangible human virtues of love, compassion, acceptance, humility and happiness. We need not continue to foster or focus upon the commoditization of goods to reap the largest profit margins or attain levels of power and influence that encourages division, curruption and greed. If the human race can be preceived as an entity that "is all things to all people" then it is high time we transform our motivations and actions towards the greater good of people and  the preservation of the envirnment. All of creation is indeed a gift to be shared by all. We should not take such important elements of our world for granted. Just as creation is a gift from our creator so we are a gift  and wonder of creation  that should  be respected, cherished and nourished. May we synergize in time?

God Speed and God Bless to everyone.

For Synergy I stand.

Here are the actions I have taken over the past 25 years to try and make the world a better place and preserve the planet

Description:

By applying conscious living to my everyday thoughts, words, and deeds, I enhance my experience of the world and enter into a mutually beneficial relationship with everything that lives...

I eat vegetarian, wholesome, locally grown organic food.

I ride my bike everywhere and car pool with a "green" friend who owns an hybrid when I really need a car.

I homeschool my child and teach her how to be a conscious human being, respectful of her environment

I recycle and re-use everything that can be in my home and outside.

I give all my clothes and other no-longer needed household items to charity.

I minimize my use of plastic bottles and containers to the very minimum.

I buy organic or green products unless it is not available to me.

I live simply and do not partake in "consumerism".  I limit my purchases to my basic needs and enjoy living with little possessions but a lot of free time to actually live life.

I minimize my energy consumption to my needs, remaining aware not to be wasteful.

I use recycled pieces for the most part to create Art pieces.

I never litter and I pick up garbage others leave carelessly behind, especially in natural settings.

I have a very wholesome and healthy lifestyle, free of cigarettes and other intoxicants.  I consider my body a sanctuary and therefore honor it, thereby raising my awareness level to treat all around me as a sanctuary too and giving it the same love and respect.

I encourage others through my inspirational writings, my Yoga Programs and my example to live a more wholesome life, respectful of all life forms.

I cultivate tolerance and love as my primary principles in order to make the world peaceful and harmonious, at least in my immediate sphere.

I never judge.  I do what I can at the best of my ability and with my given level of awareness.  I know others do too, and so I encourage them to follow my lead through example not remonstrance.

Save the planet - Don't recycle paper!

So the beginnings of the global environmentalist movement chose to tell us to recycle paper. In the light of fields of rainforest being burnt on our television news screens, it was decreed that this had to stop. We had to keep these forests, and we had to make an attempt to protect our home planet.

But wait, was that *burning* rainforests? Were all the loggers we see taking the freshly cut trees off to paper mills? Were they burning the trees and reconstituting the ashes?

Of course not. The simple fact is, if you have a sheet of paper, if may have come from a tree, but it's not come from prime Brazilian hardwood. That land is primarily cleared for farming. But that doesn't make a nice simple association that people can be expected to grasp, and didn't get nearly as much publicity as it should have done.

Earth Hour 2010

Earth Hour 2010

The countdown to Earth Hour is on! Earth Hour is a global movement with a goal of reducing energy consumption.  At 8:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 27, 2010, millions of individuals and companies worldwide will turn off their lights for one hour. Cadillac Fairview will be participating in this event by turning off all non-essential lighting in our buildings during this period (except where doing so presents a potential security and safety risk). We encourage you to participate in Earth Hour by turning off your lights at home and at work during this period. Sign-up in advance at www.earthhour.org to show your support for this cause.

Celebrate Earth Hour with Brita®

In celebration of Earth Hour, Brita® and their FilterForGood team will be at Cadillac Fairview’s Granville Square Plaza, 200 Granville Street, from 11:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Friday, March 26 (day prior to Earth Hour), to encourage Cadillac Fairview tenants and the general public to take the Brita® FilterForGood pledge to reduce their bottled water waste. The FilterForGood team will be giving away 3,000 free Brita® pitchers, making it even easier for Vancouverites to make the switch from bottled water to filtered tap water in a refillable bottle! Mark your calendar and come down to the Granville Square Plaza to take advantage of this event!

Giving up bottled water is a simple everyday change that can make a big difference, and with the right tools, it's easy! One Brita pitcher filter can effectively replace as many as 300 standard 500 mL water bottles. Since FilterForGood launched in 2008, thousands of Canadians have already pledged to collectively reduce their bottled water waste by an estimated 12.5 million bottles. For more information or to take the FilterForGood pledge, go to:  www.FilterForGood.ca.

150,000 (and counting) want to Change Chevron!

hanks to a big push from Avaaz yesterday, there are now over 150,000 people who have signed a petition telling Chevron’s new CEO John Watson to clean up the oil giant’s toxic legacy in Ecuador, and around the globe.

It is undeniable that the world wants to change Chevron. People from all over the globe are signing this petition, people young and old, from so many backgrounds. We’ve had celebrities, musicians, investors, and Chevron employees standing up and demanding change from one of the largest corporations on the planet.

As the new leader of the 3rd largest oil company in the world, CEO John Watson can right the wrongs of his predecessors and transform his company into one that cares.

150,000+ are saying “Enough is enough. Energy shouldn’t cost lives.”

From Ecuador to Richmond,CA to Burma and everywhere the oil giant operates in-between they leave a trail of environmental devastation, human rights abuses, and a legacy of health problems.

150,000+ say ENOUGH to Big Oil destroying our environment and the health of our communities.

Chevron, and their Big Oil cohorts, spend hundreds of millions of dollars on lobbyists and political contributions to buy off politicians and destroy policies that would be good for our climate and our future.

150,000+ people say ENOUGH to Chevron’s control of our government and our democracy.

To truly change Chevron and the oil industry, we are going to need to be 150,000 x stronger and louder and more powerful than we ever have been before. Our communities, our climate, our planet, and our future depend on it.
