Electric Vehicles; a solution for 'no emissions'

I recently saw a doc-film called "Who Killed the Electric Car?" It is a shame that our government & car companies will not require or produce a vehicle with 'no emissions'. That technology clearly exists! In that film an electric car was created for a past-law in California to have 'no emissions' vehicles. It was available, but purposely marketed in an undesirable far-fetched way to consumers to falsely claim there was no market value for the car, so the law was dropped. The vehicle required almost no maintenance & no fuel; sounds very desirable to me! Really, car companies just did not want to break away from profits they make with the necessary maintenance/parts of internal-combustion engines (fueled vehicles), and the law obliged! They in turn re-possessed all the electric cars they had sold including all the new ones on the lot, and had them destroyed! It is so sad that so many innovative vehicles were being forced to ruins when there are so many people in need of transportation; not to mention the resources & technology gone to waste. With all the awareness that is being made about Global Warming & with gas prices today if a law was passed again, the 'no emissions' vehicle would be successful now; I don't think the car companies would get their way again? Ethanol is not the true solution for vehicles as some are trying to say, but 'electric' vehicles could be! I think Ethanol in the long-run is just causing additional problems like rising food prices, a future corn/beat shortage, and it requires alot of energy to produce, which is not very efficient after all. On a positive note, ABC's Nightline recently had a news story about Tesla, a company specializing in electric cars. Tesla is currently talking with other major car companies about producing electric cars in the near future. Right now their car available is pricey, but they are working on producing lower costing models. The destroyed car in the doc-film was priced for the average consumer, so it can be done! In response to Daniel Bell,

In response to Daniel Bell, I think personal transportation will always be a major part of society, though public transport is suitable for many. Instead of thinking about eliminating personal transportation, which I can't imagine could happen, we need to create safer 'no emissions' vehicles, solve traffic issues & the danger in traveling. Public transportation needs the same improvements as well.

If the people behind this

If the people behind this document http://www.zerocarbonbritain.com/ get their way Britain will be using totally electric transport in the future.  They feel it can be accomplished.

Electric Avenue

I'm glad to see your interest in electric cars. That documentary was absolutely fantastic. I was enthralled and outraged, as a good doc will do to you.

I agree with you on all you said about cars and fuel. And if we must rely on personal transportation, the only sustainable step is electric. No doubt.

But let me pose this question to you, will all electric cars help with the gridlock on SoCal freeways? Is private transportation really the answer?

I think a truely sustainable transporation system will be public. Closer to the European model. I personally would love to jump on a high speed train instead of a jet.

Thoughts?
