TV ALERT: National Geographic Channel’s show “Human Footprint”

After you have all watched The 11th Hour DVD this week, then tune in Sunday, April 13th for National Geographic Channel’s show Human Footprint hosted by Elizabeth Vargas.

Imagine 13,056 pints of milk stretching down a suburban street, a 50-foot (15-meter) wall of appliances, and a river of 28,433 rubber ducks representing showers, each group showing one person's lifetime usage. These are just some of the staggering images from the National Geographic Channel show, "Human Footprint", which documents the cradle-to-grave consumption of an average American boy and girl.

If you are unable to watch the show, you can see two short clips from the show HERE

Video One: Trash Footprint… Humans produce 246 millions tons of waste a year. What does the human trash footprint look like?

Video Two: Car Footprint…Freedom on wheels means a real impact on the environment over your driving lifetime.

The Human Footprint project is a partnership between National Geographic Museum, National Geographic Channel, and Wildlife Conservation Society.

I hear people always saying, “What can I do? What can I do?” To me the first thing you can start doing TODAY is to start reducing your consumption. I really think most people still have no idea the impact all their consumption has on this planet. The 11th Hour was great in getting people to start opening their eyes on this topic, and I am happy that we are starting to see more TV Specials like this one that will continue to pry open peoples eyes to this problem.

UPDATE...Just received this e-mail alert today, April 10th from ABC's Nightline on the Human Footprint

Americans are the biggest resource consumers on the planet. An average American will consume 13,056 pints of milk in a lifetime, a whopping 12,129 hamburger buns and 87,520 slices of bread. What effect does all this consumption have on planet Earth? ABC's Elizabeth Vargas reports. Catch the full story on "20/20" Friday at 10 p.m. ET, and watch the premiere of "Human Footprint" on the National Geographic Channel Sunday, April 13. Read more here.
