Virgin plans to fly 747 on biofuel in 2008

The first commercial aircraft to be powered by biofuel will fly next year in what could be a significant step towards airlines reducing their oil consumption and carbon dioxide emissions.

Virgin Atlantic is to announce today that one of its 747 jumbo jets will be used to demonstrate that biofuels can power an aircraft. The project, which includes Boeing and General Electric, the engine-maker, hopes to have the “green” jumbo airborne in 2008.

The airline and its partners are testing up to eight biofuels to determine which is most effective at altitude. Ethanol, which is becoming an increasingly popular alternative to petrol in cars, has been rejected because it does not burn well in thin-oxygen environments.

The idea of replacing petrol with biofuel in cars is a significant trend in the car industry. Last year Ford announced a £1 billion research project to convert more of its vehicles to these new fuel sources.

However, converting an aircraft to run on biofuel was thought to be a much longer-term project and the announcement from Virgin today will surprise those in the industry who have scorned the idea.

Virgin hopes that biofuel-powered aircraft could be operating commercially within five years, which could help to cut significantly the airline industry’s carbon dioxide emissions. At present air travel contributes 2 per cent to 3 per cent of climate-change gases, but that level is increasing as the activity expands. The industry is investing in lighter aircraft and new engines to improve fuel efficiency, but biofuels could eliminate oil dependence entirely.

Sir Richard Branson, the chairman of Virgin Atlantic, launched an alternative fuels division last year, pledging the profits from his airline and trains for the next ten years.

A source close to the biofuel project said: “Everyone was saying that flying a plane with alternative energy sources was a decade away, but it is going much faster than that. The demonstration by a 747 next year will be a milestone in the airline industry’s attempts to reduce its CO2 emissions and cut its fuel bills.”

They have achieved a sustainable 1400% and 1500%, over unity by mixing the simplest of ingredients, for a period of 1 week. To give you a visual idea of what we are talking about, we simply mixed 1/3 cup of gases (hydrogen & oxygen) into 1 tablespoon of water in a very precise way according to our patent pending formula. This is how easy this energy is to obtain. It is simple to perform and has been repeated by Dr. Buxbaum in three out of five experiments.

We have had two rounds of testing in Ferndale, Michigan performed by Dr. Robert Buxbaum, of REB Research & Consulting. He is a graduate of Princeton University with a ph.D in Electrochemical Engineering reports the following results and conclusions in their latest round of tests:

Experiment: 2

In this beaker the Exp 2 thermocouple read 18.6°C, approximately, while the room –temperature thermocouple read 18.9°C. This is to say that we found we were under measuring the temperature difference by 0.3°C. Instead of there being a 1.2°C permanent temperature difference, there was a 1.5°C permanent difference, suggesting a significant heat output from the flask.

Experiment: 3

The result of this experiment suggests a significant amount of permanent heat output – enough to maintain a 1.4°C temperature difference for a period of a week. A peculiar characteristic of his difference is that it remained at 1.4°C weather or not there was insulation on the flask.

Dr. Robert E. Buxbaum's conclusion:

"Energy generation was observed above the statistically significant base level in two of three experiments performed. Heat output from these two experiments was enough to result in a steady-state temperature rise of 1.5 and 1.4 degrees celsius for a period of 1 week.

G.E.M. Technologies is moving onto its next round of testing to confirm scaling of volumes and to further define at the molecular level what kind of energy is being generated. They speculate that this energy source could possibly be the illusive Higgs Boson or God particle, but won't know for sure until the reaction is further defined under an electron microscope.

This is a miracle in a flask. What we achieved should not have happened according to known physics law. We have preliminary designs for a final delivery system, but we are still in the testing phase of our formula. G.E.M. Technologies next step is to complete mechanical designs and develop working prototypes for their GEM Machine and Omega Energy Cell.
