11th Hour to be shown on the Community Channel on Sky

For anyone in the U.K. who has Sky, 11th Hour will be shown on the Community Channel, Sky 539, on 18th January.  Also some very interesting progamming on that channel at the moment relating to climate change and environmental matters.

Burn Up - new drama on BBC

This last week there has been an exceptional drama series on BBC 2 shown in the U.K.  http://www.bbc.co.uk/drama/burnup/

Although a drama and a work of fiction the information imparted throughout the drama about climate change and the effects it is having was very good.  Also relating to what goes on between governments at the big climate change conferences.  The arm twisting and the pressure put on by varies countries and the oil companies.  It all rang very true.  Even the Guardian newspaper says

"Viewers who have never seen climate negotiations at work might find the notion of a roomful of oil-coal-lobbyists plotting the subversion of a multilateral negotiating process involving over a hundred sovereign governments far-fetched. It isn't."

It is available on the BBC I Player and well worth watching if you can

Only eight in Caernarfon, North Wales

Just returned from watching 11th Hour in Caernarfon, North Wales.  About thirty miles from where we live.  It was a lovely new theater with the best projection and sound system we have watched the film on yet but only eight people were watching with us! Still better than when we saw the film in Rotterdam.  Very little prepublicity was done though and think that is the secret to getting an audience.  Maybe some of our friends are still suffering from sore arms and are in a state of shock but we are proud of our turn out in Harlech.  Am sure one day these people will be so glad they watched 11th Hour as it so clearly explains the state we are in and why they will need to make the changes that I am sure we are going to be forced to make soon.  Better to accept change knowing why we must do so than be dragged kicking and screaming into a new world we don't understand.  Thanks again SO much for this wonderful film which so clearly explains why change is necessary.

Block buster size audience for 11th Hour at Theatr Harlech

That title sounds good but first you have to understand that twenty people are the average size of an audience in this remote little town where not many people attend cinemas.  So thirty five was a triumph we feel and the block buster comment was made  by Claire, the theatr manager.  She was delighted with the response.

The audience consisted of people from ten to eighty.  Our neighbors and wonderful welsh teacher amongst them but several people who had traveled distance and one class of environmental students who were on a course.  The film was VERY well received and much discussion followed.  Finally they turned the lights out on us else we may still be there discussing the issues.  Am sure these discussions will continue around our community and hopefully seeds have been sown for the changes we need to make

We are so glad we made the effort to bring 11th Hour to our town.  We have never done anything like it before but we are so grateful to the people at Earthaction and Warners U.K. who helped us do this.  Especially Claire at the theatre who had great enthusiasm for doing it in the end.  We really believe in this film and wish we could find a way for the world to watch it.

Theatr Harlech, the rather futuristic theatr we have on our ancient town.  Unfortunately not very environmentally designed but great location

Discussion after the film

The good news is that the film will be shown next week in another town near to us and there are still many people interested in seeing it even if they couldn't make our showing last night. Hopefully they will make the effort to see it next week.

A few days until our 11th Hour Showing

Just a few more days until our 11th Hour showing http://www.theatrharlech.com/index_en.php  My husband has been papering the the outlying communities with our poster http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v193/Shynney/11thhrPoster.jpg so there shouldn't be anyone unaware locally that 11th Hour is being shown.  He traveled around mostly by public transport, bus and train, and had some interesting conversation.  Just about everyone wanted to display the poster.  Some were intrigued that it was Leo involved with the film.  Now we just have to see who makes the effort to come.  We are rather remote and it would mean quite a lot of traveling for some people.

Another development was that The Welsh Environment Agency has become involved too.  It has appeared in our local paper that they are sponsoring the film but guess what they really want to do is distribute information about what the agency is doing.  Think this is great as its means we have got to our local government involved too.

We are excited by the chance to see this film that we love so much on the big screen again so whatever happens know we are going to enjoy it.  We think it is a great film, so beautifully made and edited with such an uplifting message.

11th Hour to be shown at Theatr Harlech in Wales, 10th July 2008

Have finally managed to arrange for 11th Hour to be shown at our local theatre on 10th of July <http://www.theatrharlech.com/eventdetails_en.php?id=191>

We are a rather remote part of the UK and it is not always easy to get to the big centers to see films so we thought it important we tried to bring 11th Hour to our community. Now we just have to get as many people in the community to attend the film. Anyone else that can make it to Harlech on that day would be much appreciated. We need a good attendance! Really believe in this film though and its solutions.

Finally got to see 11th Hour again

Finally my copy of the 11th Hour DVD arrived and just have to write and say I was 'blown away' all over again watching it for the third time.  It is a very hard hitting film with so many hard facts and bit political in the middle but I do love that ending and the vision of what we could become.  That vision has been part of me for all my life even though the reality of life has been so different.  But so comforting to know there are other people with that vision, many other people.  Still really believe we will get there some day.  Think the whole secret of learning to bond with our planet is to trying growing something.  A flower, a tree or a vegetable.  Just making that contact with the soil and watching that plant or tree grow.  Then you really understand what a miraculous planet we live on.  Good luck and I just hope one EVERYONE watches the 11th Hour.

Our solar panels are still working well heating our water for free and the wood burner is heating on cloudy days.  Our environment is cleaner and we are healthier I think.

Reason why some countries cannot face the existence of Climate Change

I know this is going to be controversial and am not pointing a finger only at the U.S. but other countries on this planet with minimal viability for human habitation.  Am just trying to understand the reluctance of some countries to accept the obvious fact of Climate Change and the dangers it presents.

In my life time have been involved with small scale farming both in the U.S. and Europe and have noticed the difference between trying to farm on poorer soils and difficult climate in the U.S. compared to here in Europe.  This only seems easily possible in the States with the use of chemicals and pesticides, whereas in Europe organic farming is much more viable.  Am sure there are many people growing organically but it is harder with the natural pests and poor soil, or at least that was my experience.

Maybe the reason for our current situation goes back to the time that people started settling the United States, Australia and other areas of the world that were very underpopulated. There was a reason for this under population. Except for the native indians who thrived living a hunter gatherer existence there were very few people living in the North American continent. This also applies to the Australian continent. These were not parts of the planet that could naturally sustain a large population living a formal settled, agricultural existence as had been done for centuries in the more amenable climates and soils of Europe and Africa.  Maybe these lands were better farmed as the original native people farmed.  Using permaculture where the soils were not disturbed to a great extent and a more nomadic lifestyle.

In order to live and thrive in hostile climates and conditions the original settlers from Europe had to conquer the land. Natural fauna and flora eliminated so that the new settlers could live the kind of existence they had been used to in Europe. From then on more and more abuse was heaped on their new continents. It became very necessary to use fossil fuels with the resultant pollution in order survive there. No wonder the U.S. will not contemplate changing the way they live as this would threaten their very existence on the their continent. It is not that they are greedy or uncaring but that they have to live like that in order to survive on their land. It is not the poor of the world who will be the first victims of climate change but people living in places where human existence is not viable without polluting and destroying much of the natural environment they live in. There is a reason you found these empty lands waiting for you but by trying to live in great numbers in areas of the world that are not viable for such population.  Before the recent climatic changes people succeeded with the massive use of fossil fuels and chemicals to live in these areas but now the climate is changing these people seem to be the first to face the real challenges of drought, storms and water shortages.  But to change the way they live would mean too greater a sacrifice and threaten their ability to live in their lands.

This is just a theory I have been thinking about while trying to explain why some people refuse to take this issue seriously. Would be glad to hear what others think.

Action on Climate Change to be taken in the UK

Prime Minister Brown spoke in parliament today about Climate Change and the actions he wants to see taken http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk_politics/7101075.stm  These are much stronger and more defined that we have had here before.  He is taking a lot of flake in the media about many things since becoming prime minister so think this will make him even more unpopular with the side that does not want us to dwell on this subject.  Very little has been reported on TV here today despite this important statement on the environment.

Much of what is in this bill was talked about at a meeting of Friends of the Earth UK that I attended in London in 2005 so I believe now, with this change of prime minister, they are being listened to.  The Friends of the Earth have been campaigning for an 80% reduction in our carbon emissions by 2050 and this is what Brown today said that he wants.  Think we need to give this new Prime Minister and chance and not listen too much to the people in the media who are constantly derogative about him as he seems to be sincere about this important issue.

Al Gore wins Nobel Peace Prize!!!!

WHAT GREAT NEWS
Al Gore and the United Nations' Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change are joint winners of this year' Nobel Peace Prize.  "They won for their efforts to build up and disseminate greater knowledge about man-made climate change, and to lay the foundations for the measures that are needed to counteract such change."
http://www.cnn.com/2007/POLITICS/10/12/nobel.gore/index.html
Surely this has to give the quest to solve and adapt to the climate change problem a great boost.  Well Done Mr Gore.  So glad his hard work as been recognized
