Fossil Fuels - Gas Flaring

ENN - "The problem isn’t new. Gas flaring a byproduct of petroleum production that spews about 400 millions of tons of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere has been going on for decades.

The imagery has reshuffled who are the top 20 gas-flaring nations, compared to previous official figures from 2004. Russia has moved to No. 1, replacing Nigeria, and new on the list, based on what satellite sensors see on their 14 daily globe-girdling journeys, are China, Oman, Uzbekistan, Malaysia, Egypt, and Saudi Arabia."

As "The 11th Hour" points out, one of the greatest historical changes of human history occurred in the last century and half with the mass utilization of fossil fuels. These pictures from space give each of us the idea of just how as a species we can impact what seems in our daily lives a very large planet.

There is no more important issue in creating a sustainable future than redesigning our fossil fuel economy.

Review

Saint Louis Post Dispatch

The true weapon of mass destruction, several of the on-screen analysts contend, is the unchecked power of multinational corporations.

Reprising his testimony from the superb documentary "The Corporation," Ray Anderson, the chastened CEO of an industrial carpet company, says that American businesses have asserted the same rights as individuals yet have none of the moral principles.

Thus, even though there is sufficient public will and technical wherewithal to promote renewable energy sources, the oil companies and their shills in government and the media won't stop sucking the Earth dry until their shareholders are satiated. And by then it will be too late for our fragile ecosystem.

Leila, Nadia, and Steve Jones

Last week Leila and Nadia spent 2 hours on Los Angeles radio speaking about the issues of "The 11th Hour" with Sex Pistol guitar legend Steve Jones, on his show "Jonesy's Jukebox." We hope to be able to stream the interview soon. Mr. Jones said it was a "great film and people should see it." Thanks, Mr. Jones.

Also pictured and on the show was Jane's Addiction founder, Eric Avery, who composed the music for "The 11th Hour."

Drudge Attacks 11th Hour

Internet news phenomenon "The Drudge Report" lashed out at "The 11th Hour" using a piece by former Greenpeace activist Patrick Moore. It was the intention of the filmmakers in making "The 11th Hour" that it would catalyze debate about the issues in the film. Unfortunately, it is obvious Mr. Moore hadn't seen the movie. We encourage knowledge based discussion and debate on these vital issues, not simply shooting in the dark.

If Mr. Moore had seen the film, he would have realized it is a call to start changing our economy by working with the systems of nature more wisely through mimicing them, instead of trying to conquer them. This is the exact thinking Mr. Moore advocates in his piece. The question of the particulars of how we do this is of course open to debate.

Mr. Moore has been an active critic of many environmental issues claiming people overlook science and fact. He should take his own advise and before lashing out at "The 11th Hour," first see the film.

Please see the film and join the discussion.

More Good Reviews

Envivronmental News Network:

In this way, the 11th Hour isn't a film that allows the audience to slip into a Never Never Land type fantasy. When it's over, you don't know if the main characters live happily ever after. Because unlike most films, this movie is about you. And your neighbor. And the rest of your fellow human beings. And that future is unwritten. It's about how we behave, how we choose. The Earth is our home. We have not been treating it very well, and therefore we have not been protecting ourselves.

Plenty Magazine:

Hour’s fearless social commentary and solution-oriented tone are what make it even more compelling than An Inconvenient Truth. It administers a healthy dose of Katrina, of course, and hits all the biggies (global warming, soil erosion, deforestation, wetland protection, overfishing, Big Oil, health issues, etc.), but it doesn’t stop at “What’s wrong with the earth?” It also asks what’s wrong with us—our relationship with nature and with ourselves—and it pulls no punches. We’re greedy, we’re lost, we’re an infection(just look at our lit-up cities from outer space and see how much we look like bacteria), we’re pursuing happiness in all the wrong ways and writing our own death sentence in the process. But for every “down with people” sentiment expressed in the film, an innovative solution and a note of hope is offered up as well. As author Paul Hawken reminds us, “The great thing about this age is that we get to re-imagine every single thing that we do.” If this is in fact the 11th hour, then it is also “a great time to be alive," because this generation is going to change the world.

Wangari Maathai is in "The 11th Hour"

"Well, I don’t only think that the biosphere is in trouble, I know it is. I just have to look around in the environment, in which I live.

In my own part of the part of the world, I keep telling people, let us not cut trees irresponsibly. Let us not destroy especially the forested mountains. Because if you destroy the forests on these mountains, the rivers will stop flowing and the rains will become irregular and the crops will fail and you will die of hunger and starvation. Now the problem is, people don’t make those linkages."

Global Green, Brad Pitt in New Orleans

Matt Petersen of Global Green USA is featured in "The 11th Hour," he and Brad Pitt visited a sustainable housing project they are building in New Orlean's 9th Ward:

Pitt was in the Lower Ninth Ward neighborhood to tour an ecologically sustainable single-family home being built by Global Green USA, an environmental group he backs.

The house that Pitt toured, loosely modeled on the distinctive New Orleans "shotgun" style of long, narrow homes, will generate almost all its electricity from 28 roof-mounted solar panels, said Global Green USA president Matt Petersen.

Global Green hopes to use the house, which should be completed this fall, as a prototype for the neighborhood. Built not far from the banks of the Mississippi River and raised by three feet on concrete pilings, it is above sea level.

The environmental group has pledged to create a residential community of "green" structures, including an 18-unit, low-income apartment building near the Mississippi.
